Father Ken Powrie

I have opened the box of Home Evening Minute Books.

Our Family started "Family Hour" in January 1955.

We sometimes read together and always played something together: Jigsaw, Ludo, Tiddlywinks, Hunt the Thimble, Snap, Dominoes, Hunt the Button, Pick up Sticks, Skittles, Happy Families, Blind Man's Buff, Charades, I Spy, Forfeits, Hide and Seek, Rummy, Riddles, Jokes, Chinese Checkers, Carpet Bowls, Push-a-penny, Twenty Questions, Monopoly.

We frequently went for drives together: Zoo Lake, Broken Down House, Northcliff, Florida Lake, Little Falls, Johannesburg to see Christmas Lights, Planatarium, Brixton Hill, Airport.

We read stories and books and magazines. The news of the day was discussed and cuttings pasted into the Home Evening Minute Book:

We had visitors with us: Walter and Karin Randall, Scott and Lou Ciel Taggart, Alma Schroeder, Elders Read and Tumbrill, Great Aunt Joyce, Mary Dryden Hart, Maudie (our servant), Alan Bibb, Brother Roberts, Glynis McTavish, Gloria and John Ashton, Elsie and David Viljoen, Nico Louw, Nicholas Irvine, Cheryl Bergin, Patrick McNally, Jean, Stephany, Stephen and "Fearless" Foster, Elders Lamb and Benincosa, Mrs, Ingrid and Monica Schutte, Andre P Nel, Andre Naude, Wendy and Roy Jackson, Elders Ward and Traveller.

We sang and learnt new (to us) hymns, We learnt "I am a Child of God" when it first came out. We played records and listened to certain radio programmes. We saw films together.

Rain or shine, some absent or not, we held Family Hour/Family Period together.
